About the project
Key Details
- Project summary
The hotel received heritage listing in 1984. After many decades of decline and neglect the Hydro Majestic underwent a series of refurbishments during the 1990s. Heritage 21 was commissioned by Architect Robert Costa as a heritage sub-consultant to provide heritage design advise and technical detailing for the refurbishment of The Hydro Majestic Hotel in 2013.
- What was done
Stage 1 development A comprehensive survey of all the buildings and structures on the site, with a view towards upgrading amenities and services throughout.
Stage 1, includes the majority of the historic areas from the Casino to the southern end of the site and new construction, re-planting and beautification of the gardens including the avenue of Pines and the renovation of the Hotel façade, which has a 1.1 km frontage to the Megalong Valley escarpment. In the renovated Hotel, the historic Casino building became the Casino Lobby, a grand lobby entry and function room. A renovated area behind the Casino Lobby became a five-star restaurant. The other historic buildings, The Billiard Room, The Cat’s Alley, The Majestic Ballroom in Hargraves House, and the Delmonte conference rooms were also renovated in this stage.
- Time frame
Heritage 21 produced a Conservation Management Plan (CMP) within 4 months. The CMP established the constraints and opportunities for the proposed development.
Services provided
- Conservation Management Plan
- Survey of entire campus noting the physical condition of all built elements
- Participation in the design development process.
- Heritage technical advise.
Why was the work undertaken?
The reason for the proposed development was the poor state of disrepair in relation to most of the fabric due to the hotel being closed for business over a period of at least 6-7 years. H21 identified the necessary repairs and provided specifications and policies for the treatment of all the heritage fabric.
Who was the work completed for?
Robert Costa of Space Architecture on behalf of the owners, Huong Nguyen and George Saad The Escarpment Group
Outcome
Walking through the front doors of the newly restored Hydro Majestic hotel in the Blue Mountains is like being transported in a time machine to the year 1904. Complete refurbishment of the Hotel was upgraded, accommodation and associated facilities including landscape elements.
