- About The Project
Heritage 21 worked closely with Craig Shelsher of Custance Associates Architects on this project which was to convert the former Unilever Offices into a residential flat building. It is an interesting building with on-grade parking under the building and a single office level above a highly unique ventilation and lighting system introduced in the original design.
The original development application was refused by the Inner West Council. The applicant who is Sameh Ibrahim of PDS Developments appealed and the matter went to the Land and Environment Court. Luckily, Robert Staas was the expert for the council and during the conciliation process, he made a slew of helpful and positive recommendations so that the matter could be resolved at conciliation without going to a full hearing. Construction commenced shortly after, and Heritage 21 undertook the role of heritage certifier which involved periodical attendance on-site during construction and ultimate sign-off.
- What was done
The project entailed converting the building into residential units with parking on grade – under the building and two levels of residential above the parking. Additionally, a new section was introduced at the rear of the building on the unused part of the site. This is a contemporary building with contemporary finishes and materials that is artfully and seamlessly attached to the original federation periods office.
