Why was the work undertaken?
An opportunity arose for the erstwhile chewing gum factory to be converted into a residential apartment while simultaneously allowing for conservation of the original 1918 building. Some of the major features of the building is the brickwork and very early use of reinforced concrete- amongst the earliest use of that new building technology in Australia.
Who was the work completed for?
The developers for the project were Ed Horton and Danny Flynn from Stable Properties
Outcome
A very positive outcome resulted from close collaboration of Heritage 21 with Stable Properties (developer) and AJC Architects along with numerous other consultants. The client was directly instrumental in the conservation works and had a high regard for the significance of the building. This attitude strongly encouraged everybody working on the project to highly appreciate the intrinsic heritage values comprised on the site.
