  • Project summary

    Heritage 21 worked closely with the developer; Robert Azar to convert the previous armament factory into a residential flat building.

    Heritage 21 converted this former armament factory into a residential flat building ensuring all the original features were maintained and conserved. Heritage 21 was involved in all stages of the project including design, approval process, construction and heritage sign off. Throughout the project, Heritage 21 provided detailed design advice in relation to the stair, interpretation, photographic archival recording, the minuting of meetings, and clients liaison.

    Heritage 21 regularly attended site throughout the construction and provided key advice to the builder and the developer including sub-contractors, thus, ensuring that the primary heritage significance of the building was maintained.

    Approximately 28 months from DA lodgement to completion of construction.

Why was the work undertaken?

The work was undertaken as part of the NSW government’s endeavour to provide more housing in Sydney due to its burgeoning population.

The work was undertaken for the architects/ builders ‘Australian Consulting Architects’ and Western Sydney Lands

Outcome

A building which had been left derelict for at least 40 years has now been revitalized into a residential flat building with prominent heritage features retained and incorporated into the design of the repurposed building. A very positive result especially given that at the end of the repurposing process, key heritage aspects of the building were retained and conserved such as the staircase and the observation room.
