About the project
Spectacle Island is a naval base off the coast of Drummoyne in NSW and still functions as a naval base today. Having been commissioned in 1865 as a munition manufacturing facility, Spectacle Island became extremely active during WW1 and WW2 during which time as many as 3,000 labourers toiled in the island’s 50 separate buildings, manufacturing explosive ordnance for the war effort. In 2003, Heritage 21 wrote the Conservation Management Plan for all 52 buildings on the island and has been ever since on various heritage projects including sandstone refurbishment and repairs to various buildings including the detailed specification and administering of the work.
