- Project summary
Heritage 21 has been working at Victoria Barracks for the last 20 years and during that time has worked on virtually every one of the 120 odd structures at the barracks. Most recently, Heritage 21 has worked closely with PCB Contractors and their stone masons on repairing and conserving 8 separate sections of sandstone walling that surrounds the barracks. Prior to that, all the lead paint was removed from the interior of Building 1- the main building at the barracks. A schedule of works was completed for Building 76 and Building 83 and a range of other conservation works have been carried under Heritage 21’s supervision throughout the site including most of the built structures and landscape elements.
- What was done
A range of different projects including rebuilding parts of the perimeter sandstone wall with structural footings, identifying conservation works required in various buildings, working with engineers to install security pipework throughout the barracks and custom designing each of the entry points of services into the building in order to minimise impacts. Repairing the balcony and verandah of building 76- Officers Mess, sundry repairs to the accommodation building (Married Couples Terraces), major repairs to the Chapel internally and externally, signage throughout the barracks on various buildings, etc.

Why was the work undertaken?
Defence has a strategy for ongoing maintenance of its sites throughout Australia. Victoria Barracks is a part of this strategy. Heritage has worked with most of the appointed building contractors to provide detailed heritage advice and guidance in order to protect the buildings and specify correct materials and methodologies for the repair and conservation of most of the buildings on the campus.
Who was the work completed for?
Mainly for Puch Construction and Building Contractors who were appointed by Defence to carry out the various projects. Our role was to support Puch in all of their decisions regarding conservation, repair and reinstatement of damaged or degraded fabric within the campus of buildings at the Barracks.
Outcome
Conservation of major structures at the barracks including perimeter sandstone walls, repairs, and renovation to Building 1 (the main structure on the site) and attendance to various repairs and the introduction of services throughout the campus of buildings at the barracks.
