Key Details
- About The Project
Heritage 21 was involved with the Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park Cemetery for approximately ten years; working with the cemetery Board on various projects related to the expansion of the cemetery into the neighbouring Chinese Market Gardens. Both the cemetery (Crematorium) and the Chinese Market Gardens are heritage listed. Consequently, the proposed expansion generated a lot of political conflict with the community and the Heritage Office of NSW. Heritage 21 participated in all stages of the project related to the expansion working closely with parallel heritage consultants, solicitors, politicians, the community, and the Board.

Why was the work undertaken?
The Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park Cemetery had reached capacity and had run out of space for future burials. Consistent with community expectations, the Cemetery Board took it upon itself to address this community need by seeking expansion into the neighbouring Chinese Market Gardens. In anticipation of much antagonism, the Board prepared itself with many reports and legal advice. Despite this endeavour, the proposal was ultimately refused by the NSW Heritage Office and the plans were dropped, thus further compounding the crucial need for more burial space.
Who was the work completed for?
Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park Cemetery & Crematorium Botany Cemetery
Outcome
Major learning curve for Heritage 21 in dealing with top level authorities, high level solicitors, politicians and parallel consultants which is a necessary part of the heritage procurement system. |
