Key Details
- Project summary
The former residence at 618A Bourke Street Surry Hills was built by 1882 although fabric evidence on site suggests the construction date may be as early as the 1860s. The original form of the building consisted of a west facing two storey masonry Gothic style residence with a deep setback from Bourke Street. The floor plan had two rooms on each level and a staircase in between. The main entry was located on the front (west) facade. Although the house had been vacant for a number of years and had fallen into disrepair, the original exterior of the building was largely intact and some original fabric was present internally.
The property has local historic and aesthetic significance as one of the earliest residences built along Bourke Street and is a rare surviving example of the residential Victorian Gothic Style. It provides evidence of the early subdivision patterns, development and style of housing in the local area in the mid-19th Century
Heritage 21 worked with the applicant over a period of 3 years in order to get permission from council into convert the 1850’s house into a childcare centre.
- What was done
The original fabric of the building was carefully conserved including Lath and plaster ceilings, 170-year-old brickwork some remaining original windows and doors and fireplaces. Most of the original room layouts were contained, but the original internal stair, which was to steep for purpose, had to be removed. A section of new building work was added to the rear of the 2-storey pitch roof construction.
